Name
Jacquard machine
Material
Metal
The Jacquard machine contains a tape of punch cards that are pushed forward with the loom pedals (called "calcole") on a special cylinder. The punch card is read by the needles: the threads corresponding to the holes move, those corresponding to the non-perforated areas do not. Each advancement of the machine corresponds to 1 millimeter of fabric. The information read by the needle (presence of the hole) translates into the movement of the hooks, which move the threads. The machine allows for highly complex designs, as the advanced manipulation of the warp threads creates very elaborate textile structures.
